Do Chinese citizens need a visa for Vietnam?
Yes. Chinese citizens with an ordinary passport need a visa for any stay in Vietnam, and the e-visa is the usual route.
China's row on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs exemption list (published June 30, 2025, checked October 2026) has crosses under Diplomatic, Official/Service/Special and "Ordinary (for official purpose)", with a 90-day stay. The plain Ordinary column is empty, and China is absent from the 45-day lists.
Guides that say Chinese tourists can enter freely mix up the official-purpose column with the ordinary one. For the general rules, see Do I need a visa for Vietnam?

Visa on arrival for Chinese citizens
Chinese citizens can use visa on arrival only when flying into Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang or Cam Ranh. You need an approval letter before you board and pay a $25 or $50 stamping fee at the airport.
It does not work for cruise ports or land borders. For most trips the e-visa is simpler; you can compare both when you choose a service.
Vietnam embassy in China
You do not need an embassy for an e-visa, which is issued online. Vietnam has an embassy in Beijing and consulates in other Chinese cities; check the list of Vietnamese missions on mofa.gov.vn for the nearest one if you need consular help. Our page on the Vietnam embassy in China collects the details.
Tips for Chinese travelers
Two points help Chinese travelers: the official-purpose passport, and the land border.
An official-purpose passport is a different case
The Ministry's table has a separate column for ordinary passports used on official business, and China is marked there. A traveler on a tourist trip or private business with an ordinary passport falls under neither that column nor the plain Ordinary one, so the e-visa applies.
Name the land gate you will use
Many Chinese travelers cross by land. The e-visa is valid at the border gates listed on it, out of 26 land border gates, so name the gate you will really use on the form, and check that it is open to foreigners.
eVisaVietnam.com is a private visa service operated by TK VIET NAM., JSC, not the Vietnamese government. You can apply yourself at evisa.gov.vn for US$25. If you want your files checked and a delivery time backed by a full refund, apply for your e-visa with us.
