Do citizens of Australia need to visit the embassy for a Vietnam visa?

Yes, but not from the embassy. Citizens of Australia with an ordinary passport are not on a Vietnamese exemption list (Ministry of Foreign Affairs list), so most apply online for the e-visa, valid for up to 90 days.

The e-visa is issued online, so there is no trip to Canberra, no passport to post and no appointment to book. Any embassy service beyond that is a question for the embassy itself. For the rules by passport see Vietnam visa for Australia citizens.

Apply for the e-visa instead

A Vietnam e-visa through us starts at $47 for single entry, government fee included, and $82 for multiple entry. Standard takes 5 to 7 working days, and the faster speeds are on our urgent e-visa page. You apply in three steps:

  1. Enter your details: Passport, travel dates, the airport or border gate you will use and your speed.
  2. Pay and add files: Pay by card, then upload your passport data page and a recent photo.
  3. Receive the e-visa: We check everything, submit it and email you the approved PDF.

You can also apply yourself at evisa.gov.vn for US$25. Our guide on how to apply walks through both. If you want your files checked and a delivery time backed by a full refund, apply for your e-visa with us.

Before you visit

Embassies close on Vietnamese public holidays, on local public holidays and around Tet, so check both calendars. Bring your passport and any forms the embassy lists on its website.

Call or email first if you need a particular service, because consular sections often open for only a few hours a day. If your trip is a holiday or a short business visit, you may not need to go at all: the e-visa is applied for online.

Phone numbers, street addresses and opening hours are the details that change most often. If a number does not connect, look for a notice on the embassy website and ask the embassy to confirm by email.
