Vietnam Visa for New Zealand Citizens

Vietnam visa for New Zealand citizens: you need a visa, usually the 90-day e-visa from $47 (approx. NZ$84). NZD prices, Auckland cut-offs, steps.

How to apply Vietnam evisa

You need a Vietnam visa for New Zealand citizens on every visit: New Zealand is not on Vietnam's visa-free list, so the standard route is the e-visa, valid for up to 90 days. With us it costs from $47 (approx. NZ$84) all-in for single entry. This page covers the e-visa, prices in New Zealand dollars, urgent cut-offs in Auckland time, the steps, documents, visa on arrival and the embassy. You can apply for your e-visa with us in about ten minutes.

Getting a Vietnam visa from NZ has one quirk: Vietnam is five or six hours behind Auckland, so a Vietnamese working day starts at 13:00 or 14:00 your time. An order placed in the New Zealand morning waits for the Vietnamese office to open, while one placed in the afternoon is processed straight away.

Do New Zealanders need a visa for Vietnam?

Yes. New Zealanders need a visa for Vietnam for any purpose and any length of stay. New Zealand is not covered by Vietnam's 45-day exemptions or by any bilateral agreement on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs list (checked October 2026).

If you hold a second passport, check which one you will use. A British passport allows up to 45 days without a visa, while an Australian passport does not. For other cases, see Do I need a visa for Vietnam?.

Vietnam visa for New Zealand citizens: urgent cut-offs in Auckland time

Standard takes 5 to 7 working days. The urgent speeds use Vietnamese working days, which start at 8:00 in Vietnam: 14:00 in Auckland during daylight saving time and 13:00 in winter.

The table converts each order cut-off on a Vietnamese working day. Auckland uses daylight saving time from the last Sunday in September to the first Sunday in April.

Vietnam visa requirements for New Zealand citizens

The Vietnam visa requirements for New Zealand citizens match those for every e-visa applicant:

  • New Zealand passport: Valid for at least 6 months from your entry date, with two blank pages.
  • Passport data page: Full page in the frame, no glare on the code lines at the bottom.
  • Portrait: Recent, facing forward, white background, no glasses.
  • Trip details: Arrival and departure dates, entry and exit gates, first accommodation address.
  • Card: Debit or credit card that works for overseas online payments.

Photo examples and the full checklist are on our e-visa requirements page.

Visa on arrival for New Zealanders

New Zealanders can use visa on arrival only when flying into Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang or Cam Ranh. You need an approval letter before you board and pay a $25 or $50 stamping fee at the airport.

It does not work for cruise ports or land borders. For most trips the e-visa is simpler; you can compare both when you choose a service.

Vietnam embassy in New Zealand

Vietnam has an embassy in New Zealand, but you do not need it for an e-visa, which is issued online. It handles passport-sticker visas for longer or special-purpose stays; details are on our page about the Vietnam embassy in New Zealand.

Tips for New Zealand travelers

Two points matter most for New Zealanders: how an order placed on a New Zealand weekend is handled, and why the e-visa dates deserve a second look.

Ordering on a weekend in New Zealand

Our weekend window runs from Friday 18:00 to Sunday 16:00 Vietnam time. In Auckland that is Saturday 00:00 to Sunday 22:00 during daylight saving time, and Friday 23:00 to Sunday 21:00 in winter.

Order the Weekend and public holidays speed on a Saturday before 21:20 Auckland time during daylight saving time (20:20 in winter) and the e-visa arrives by 00:30 (23:30 in winter), 18:30 Saturday in Vietnam. Our page on the weekend and holiday e-visa covers this in detail.

Do not overstay

The New Zealand government's SafeTravel service, in its Vietnam advice updated on 1 July 2026, asks travelers to read their visa conditions carefully, because overstaying can affect your ability to book accommodation. Check the entry date, the number of days and the single or multiple entry on the e-visa before you fly.

eVisaVietnam.com is a private visa service operated by TK VIET NAM., JSC, not the Vietnamese government. You can apply yourself at evisa.gov.vn for US$25. If you want your files checked and a delivery time backed by a full refund, apply for your e-visa with us.
