Vietnam E-Visa Requirements

Vietnam e-visa requirements as of October 2026: passport validity, photo rules, the trip details the form asks for, entry ports, and a printable checklist.

How to apply Vietnam evisa

The Vietnam e-visa requirements are short: a passport valid for at least 6 months from your entry date with two blank pages, a recent portrait photo, a scan of the passport data page, your trip details and a card to pay the fee. This page covers each one, the things you do not need, a checklist to print and what happens at the border. When your documents are ready, you can apply for your e-visa with us and have them checked before submission.

Vietnam has issued e-visas to citizens of every country since August 2023, according to the national tourism board's visa requirements page (checked October 2026). We checked the requirements below against the application form on evisa.gov.vn on October 8, 2026.

Documents required for a Vietnam e-visa

Two files are required for a Vietnam e-visa: a portrait photo and an image of your passport data page. evisa.gov.vn will not let you continue until both are uploaded. Everything else is typed into the form.

Your Vietnam e-visa documents therefore come down to the passport itself, two images of good quality and a payment card. The form also asks for contact details, an emergency contact and an address in Vietnam, which you type in rather than upload. If you have these ready, the application takes one sitting, as our guide on how to apply shows step by step.

Passport requirements

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date, with two blank pages (as of October 2026). Airlines check this at boarding, and so do border officers on arrival, so renew first if your passport is close to the limit.

The name on your application must match your passport exactly. evisa.gov.vn asks you to enter the full name as it appears in the two lines of code at the bottom of the data page, in capital letters. If your passport has only a surname or only given names, the form tells you to enter it under given names. Our passport rules in detail cover second passports and dual nationals.

The data page image needs all four corners in view and the two code lines sharp, with no glare on the laminate. The site reads your details from those lines and warns "No MRZ detected" if it cannot.

Photo requirements

The Vietnam e-visa photo must be recent, 4x6 cm, in jpg or jpeg format, up to 2MB, with your face looking straight at the camera, no hat, no glasses and a white background. The table lists each point as evisa.gov.vn states it, in the order the site gives.

ItemRequirement on evisa.gov.vn
Age of photoRecent, newly taken
Size4x6 cm
Filejpg or jpeg, 2MB or less
FaceLooking straight, fully visible
AccessoriesNo hat, no glasses
ClothingPolite clothes
BackgroundWhite

The site runs a face check on upload. A photo of a printed photo, or a crop from your passport, triggers the warning "Portrait photo was captured from another source". Take a new photo with a phone against a white wall instead. Each warning and its fix is on our page of e-visa problems and fixes, and the photo guide shows examples.

Trip details and entry ports

The form asks for your purpose of entry, intended entry date, length of stay, the dates the e-visa should be valid, your entry and exit gate, and a full address in Vietnam such as your first hotel. You also give an emergency contact and an estimate of trip expenses.

The e-visa is accepted at 79 border gates: 15 international airports, 26 land border gates and 38 seaports (as of October 2026). Gates are listed by name, so Hanoi is "Noi Bai International Airport" and the main crossing from Phnom Penh is "Moc Bai Landport". The full list of entry ports gives every name exactly as it appears in the form.

Set the validity window wider than your trip. A 90-day e-visa costs the same as a 30-day one, so a margin for a delayed flight costs nothing.

What you do not need

You do not upload a flight ticket, hotel booking, bank statement or invitation letter for a tourist e-visa. The form asks where you will stay and how much you expect to spend, but there is nowhere to attach proof.

Several guides list bank statements, police certificates or translations; those belong to work, study and other long-stay visas, not the e-visa. Keep your return ticket and first hotel booking on your phone anyway, since an airline or border officer may ask about your plans.

Vietnam e-visa requirements checklist

Use this Vietnam e-visa checklist before you open the form. Each line is something the application will ask for:

  • [ ] Data page image: full page, four corners, code lines sharp, no glare
  • [ ] New portrait photo: 4x6 cm, jpg or jpeg, up to 2MB, white background, no glasses or hat
  • [ ] Entry date, exit date and e-visa validity window
  • [ ] Entry and exit gate, by name

  • [ ] Permanent home address and a contact address

Vietnam entry requirements at the border

At the border you show your passport and the e-visa, printed or on your phone, and enter within the dates on the e-visa through one of the 79 gates. E-visa holders must enter and exit through the international border gates the government designates.

The two questions that come up next are whether you need a visa at all, and how children sharing a parent's passport are handled.

Not sure you need a visa?

Citizens of some countries can enter Vietnam visa-free for a set number of days, and do not need an e-visa for a short stay within that limit. The list and the number of days change, so check Do I need a visa for Vietnam? for your passport before you apply.

Children on a parent's passport

A child with their own passport needs their own e-visa. For children under 14 who are listed in a parent's passport, evisa.gov.vn has a section to include them on the parent's e-visa, and it tells applicants not to use it for a child who holds a separate passport.

eVisaVietnam.com is a private visa service operated by TK VIET NAM., JSC, not the Vietnamese government. You can apply yourself at evisa.gov.vn for US$25. If you want a person to check your photo and passport scan against these requirements before submission, apply for your e-visa with us, or choose a service if you already applied.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a flight ticket or hotel booking for a Vietnam e-visa?

No upload is needed. The form asks for your entry date, gate and the address of your first stay in Vietnam, but it has no place to attach a ticket or booking. Keep both on your phone, since an airline or border officer may ask about your travel plans.

Can I take the e-visa photo with my phone?

Yes. A phone photo works if it is newly taken, faces the camera straight on, has a white background and no glasses, and is saved as jpg or jpeg under 2MB. Do not photograph a printed picture or crop your passport photo; the site flags both.

How long does the e-visa take once my documents are ready?

evisa.gov.vn gives 3 working days in its FAQ (checked October 2026). Through eVisaVietnam.com, the time depends on the speed you choose and is shown before you pay; our price page lists every speed from Standard to 1.5 working hours.

Is the Vietnam e-visa open to my nationality?

Yes. Vietnam has issued e-visas to citizens of all countries and territories since August 2023. Some nationalities can also enter visa-free for short stays, in which case an e-visa is only needed if you stay longer than the exemption allows.
