Vietnam Visa for UK Citizens: 45 Days Visa-Free

Vietnam visa for UK citizens: 45 days visa-free. For longer trips, the 90-day e-visa from $47 (approx. £36), with GBP prices and UK cut-offs.

How to apply Vietnam evisa

A Vietnam visa for UK citizens is not needed for stays of up to 45 days: British citizens enter visa-free, for any purpose, under a government resolution valid until March 14, 2028. For a longer trip you need an e-visa before you fly, from $47 (approx. £36) through us. This page covers the exemption, when you still need an e-visa, prices in pounds, cut-offs in UK time, the steps, entry requirements and the embassy. If your trip runs past 45 days, apply for your e-visa with us.

So a Vietnam visa from the UK only matters if you stay longer than 45 days, or if you travel on a British passport that does not make you a UK citizen. The UK government's entry requirements for Vietnam give the same 45 days for tourism or business.

Do I need a visa for Vietnam from the UK?

No, not for a stay of up to 45 days. British citizens can enter Vietnam without a visa and stay 45 days from the day they arrive, for tourism, business or family visits. You show your passport at immigration and receive an entry stamp.

You do need a visa if your stay will be longer, and the e-visa is the way to get one. Other nationalities, including travel companions on different passports, are covered on Do I need a visa for Vietnam?.

The 45-day visa exemption for British citizens

The exemption comes from Resolution 44/NQ-CP, which lets citizens of the United Kingdom and 11 other countries stay up to 45 days, whatever their passport type or purpose of entry. It applies from March 15, 2025 to March 14, 2028 (checked October 2026).

The 45 days count from your entry date, and you must leave by the end of that period. The same list covers Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the Nordic countries; our visa-free entry list shows every exempt nationality. Policies like this are reviewed before they expire, so check again if you travel in 2028.

When UK citizens need an e-visa

UK citizens need an e-visa when a single stay in Vietnam will be longer than 45 days. Apply before you fly: the e-visa allows up to 90 days, and a 90-day multiple-entry e-visa costs the same as a 30-day one through us.

A visa for Vietnam from the UK also makes sense for a long trip with several border crossings, such as two months moving between Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. A multiple-entry e-visa fixes your dates in advance, so each return to Vietnam is covered by the same document rather than a new visa-free entry.

Do not plan to enter visa-free and sort out a longer stay later. Apply for the e-visa first and use it for the whole visit.

Vietnam entry requirements for UK travelers

The Vietnam entry requirements for UK travelers are the same with or without an e-visa: a passport valid for at least 6 months from your entry date, with two blank pages and no damage. With an e-visa, you also show the PDF, printed or on your phone.

The Vietnam visa requirements for UK citizens who need an e-visa are a passport data page scan, a recent photo on a white background, your trip details and a payment card; our e-visa requirements page lists them in full.

Vietnam embassy in the UK

The Embassy of Vietnam is in London. Visa-free visitors and e-visa holders do not need it. It handles passport-sticker visas for longer or special-purpose stays and questions about other British passports; contacts are on our page about the Vietnam embassy in the UK.

Tips for British travelers

Two cases need extra care: British passports that are not issued to UK citizens, and long trips that go past 45 days.

British passports that are not citizen passports

Resolution 44/NQ-CP names citizens of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. If you travel on a British National (Overseas) passport or another British passport that does not show UK citizenship, confirm with the embassy before relying on visa-free entry, or apply for an e-visa, which every nationality can get.

Planning a long trip around Southeast Asia

Count your days in Vietnam per visit, not for the whole trip. If any single stay will pass 45 days, or you want one document to cover several returns, a multiple-entry e-visa covering the whole period avoids questions at the border.

eVisaVietnam.com is a private visa service operated by TK VIET NAM., JSC, not the Vietnamese government. You can apply yourself at evisa.gov.vn for US$25. For stays beyond 45 days, if you want your files checked and a refund if the e-visa is refused or late, apply for your e-visa with us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do UK citizens need a visa for Vietnam?

Not for stays of up to 45 days. British citizens enter visa-free under Resolution 44/NQ-CP until March 14, 2028, with a passport valid for at least 6 months from the entry date. For a longer stay, apply for an e-visa before travelling.

Do you need a visa for Vietnam from the UK for 60 days?

Yes. Sixty days is longer than the 45-day exemption, so you need an e-visa, which allows up to 90 days. Apply before you fly and set the e-visa dates to cover your whole stay, with a few days of margin.

Does visa-free entry cover a business trip from the UK?

Yes. Resolution 44/NQ-CP applies whatever the purpose of entry, and the UK government's advice lists tourism and business. Taking up employment in Vietnam is a different matter and needs the appropriate visa and permits.

Can I extend my 45 days once I am in Vietnam?

Do not plan on it. If you know your stay will exceed 45 days, apply for an e-visa before you leave the UK and enter on it. That way your permitted stay matches your plans from the first day.
