Icelandic citizens with an ordinary passport need a visa for Vietnam, so the Vietnam visa for Icelandic citizens is the e-visa, valid for up to 90 days and from $47 (approx. ISK 5,740) all-in through us for single entry. Iceland is on none of Vietnam's exemption lists, even though Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden are all on the 45-day list. Yes. Icelandic citizens with an ordinary passport need a visa for any stay in Vietnam, and the e-visa is the usual route.
Iceland is not on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs exemption list (published June 30, 2025, checked October 2026), and it is not among the 12 countries added to the 45-day list by Resolution 229/NQ-CP, in force from August 15, 2025.
Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden appear on the 45-day list in the same Ministry table, which makes Iceland the one Nordic country without it. For the general rules, see Do I need a visa for Vietnam?

- Portrait: Recent, facing forward, white background, no glasses.

Visa on arrival for Icelandic citizens
Icelandic citizens can use visa on arrival only when flying into Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang or Cam Ranh. You need an approval letter before you board and pay a $25 or $50 stamping fee at the airport.
It does not work for cruise ports or land borders. For most trips the e-visa is simpler; you can compare both when you choose a service.
Vietnam embassy in Iceland
You do not need an embassy for an e-visa, which is issued online. For consular help, check the list of Vietnamese missions on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website (mofa.gov.vn) for the one that covers Iceland.
Tips for Icelandic travelers
Two points catch Icelandic travelers: borrowing a Nordic neighbor's rule, and the passport that decides at the border.
Do not use the Nordic rule
Danish, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish passports allow 45 days in Vietnam without a visa, and Icelanders often travel with friends from those countries. An Icelandic passport has no such right, so a stay of any length needs the e-visa.
Dual citizens and residents of Iceland
The passport you show at the border decides what you need. If you travel on a Danish, Finnish, Norwegian or Swedish passport, the 45-day exemption applies to that passport. If you travel on your Icelandic one, apply for the e-visa and enter the passport number you will use, because the e-visa is issued for one passport.
eVisaVietnam.com is a private visa service operated by TK VIET NAM., JSC, not the Vietnamese government. You can apply yourself at evisa.gov.vn for US$25. If you want your files checked and a delivery time backed by a full refund, apply for your e-visa with us.
