Do Maltese citizens need a visa for Vietnam?

Yes. Maltese citizens with an ordinary passport need a visa for any stay in Vietnam, and the e-visa is the usual route.

Malta's row on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs exemption list (published June 30, 2025, checked October 2026) carries a cross under Diplomatic only, with 90 days. The Official and Ordinary columns are empty, and Malta is absent from the later 45-day lists. Pages that give the e-visa a 30-day maximum describe an older limit; the stay is up to 90 days under Law 23/2023/QH15. For the general rules, see Do I need a visa for Vietnam?

Vietnam visa for Maltese citizens: urgent cut-offs in Valletta time

Standard takes 5 to 7 working days. The urgent speeds use Vietnamese working days, which start at 8:00 in Vietnam: 3:00 in Valletta during summer time and 2:00 in winter. Europe follows summer time from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October.

Order cut-off Valletta, winter Valletta, summer time
Same day (Vietnam 14:15) 8:15 9:15

Emergency (Vietnam 17:30) 11:30 12:30
1 working day (Vietnam 18:00) 12:00 13:00

Example in summer time: you order on Tuesday at 4:00 in Valletta, which is 9:00 on Tuesday in Vietnam. Emergency arrives by 5:30, Super Urgent by 6:30 and Same day by 13:00, all in Valletta time. Ordered on Tuesday at 11:00 instead (16:00 in Vietnam), Emergency still arrives by 12:30, but Super Urgent and Same day have passed their cut-offs: Super Urgent arrives on Wednesday at 6:00 and Same day on Wednesday at 9:00.

The weekend window starts at Friday 13:00 in Valletta in summer time (12:00 in winter) and ends on Sunday at 11:00 (10:00). • Portrait: Recent, facing forward, white background, no glasses.

Visa on arrival for Maltese citizens

Maltese citizens can use visa on arrival only when flying into Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang or Cam Ranh. You need an approval letter before you board and pay a $25 or $50 stamping fee at the airport.

It does not work for cruise ports or land borders. For most trips the e-visa is simpler; you can compare both when you choose a service.

Vietnam embassy in Malta

You do not need an embassy for an e-visa, which is issued online. For consular help, check the list of Vietnamese missions on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website (mofa.gov.vn) for the one that covers Malta.

Tips for Maltese travelers

Two points catch Maltese travelers: assuming EU membership helps, and trusting a 30-day limit.

EU membership does not waive the visa

Vietnamese visa exemption is decided country by country. Malta is an EU member, but the 45-day list names only certain EU countries, such as Croatia and Belgium, and Malta is not one of them.

The e-visa is not limited to 30 days

Some pages still describe a 30-day maximum for Maltese applicants. The current e-visa allows up to 90 days with single or multiple entry, at no extra cost compared with 30 days.

eVisaVietnam.com is a private visa service operated by TK VIET NAM., JSC, not the Vietnamese government. You can apply yourself at evisa.gov.vn for US$25. If you want your files checked and a delivery time backed by a full refund, apply for your e-visa with us.
