Vietnam Visa for Scottish Citizens: 45 Days Without a Visa, Then the E-Visa
Vietnam visa for Scottish citizens: no visa for 45 days or less. Longer trips need the e-visa, from $47 (approx. £36). British pounds prices.
Scottish citizens with an ordinary passport do not need a visa for a stay of 45 days or less, so the Vietnam visa for Scottish citizens only matters when you plan to stay longer. Then the standard route is the e-visa, valid for up to 90 days and from $47 (approx. £36) all-in through us for single entry. This page covers the 45-day rule, when an e-visa is needed, prices in British pounds, urgent cut-offs in Edinburgh time, the steps, documents, visa on arrival and the embassy. You can apply for your e-visa with us in about ten minutes.
Edinburgh is six or seven hours behind Vietnam, so the Vietnamese working day ends around lunchtime for you. The visa rule is the same as for the rest of the United Kingdom; the cut-off table below shows your clock.

Do Scottish citizens need a visa for Vietnam?
No, not for 45 days or less. Scotland has no passport of its own: Scottish citizens travel on a UK passport, and UK citizens can enter Vietnam without a visa for up to 45 days from the date of entry, from March 15, 2025 to March 14, 2028, under Resolution 44/NQ-CP.
You still need a valid passport and a ticket out. Our page for United Kingdom citizens covers the whole country. Our page on Vietnam visa exemption rules lists every country covered.
How the 45-day exemption works
The rule is Resolution 44/NQ-CP, a decision by the Vietnamese Government that covers citizens of 12 countries, among them the United Kingdom. The national tourism authority reports it applies whatever the passport type and purpose, as long as you meet Vietnam's entry conditions.
The end date is March 14, 2028. Guides say holders of other British passport types, such as the British National (Overseas) passport, need a visa; check with the embassy if that is you.
When Scottish citizens need a visa for Vietnam
Whether travelers from Scotland need a visa depends on the length and purpose of the stay: they need a Vietnam e-visa for any stay longer than 45 days.
Apply before you fly: the e-visa lets you stay up to 90 days, with single or multiple entry, under Law 23/2023/QH15.
Typical cases are a long working holiday or a family visit that runs past six weeks. A 90-day e-visa costs no more than a 30-day one through us.

Urgent cut-offs in Edinburgh time
Standard takes 5 to 7 working days. The urgent speeds use Vietnamese working days, which start at 8:00 in Vietnam: 2:00 in Edinburgh during summer time and 1:00 in winter. The United Kingdom follows summer time from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October.
| Order cut-off | Edinburgh, winter | Edinburgh, summer time |
|---|---|---|
| Same day (Vietnam 14:15) | 7:15 | 8:15 |
| Super Urgent (Vietnam 15:30) | 8:30 | 9:30 |
| Emergency (Vietnam 17:30) | 10:30 | 11:30 |
| 1 working day (Vietnam 18:00) | 11:00 | 12:00 |
Example in summer time: you order on Tuesday at 3:00 in Edinburgh, which is 9:00 on Tuesday in Vietnam. Emergency arrives by 4:30, Super Urgent by 5:30 and Same day by 12:00, all in Edinburgh time. Ordered on Tuesday at 10:00 instead (16:00 in Vietnam), Emergency still arrives by 11:30, but Super Urgent and Same day have passed their cut-offs: Super Urgent arrives on Wednesday at 5:00 and Same day on Wednesday at 8:00.
The weekend window starts at Friday 12:00 in Edinburgh in summer time (11:00 in winter) and ends on Sunday at 10:00 (9:00). In that window, order the Weekend and public holidays speed before 9:20 in summer time and it arrives by 12:30 the same day. Our urgent e-visa page has every speed in Vietnam time.

Vietnam visa on arrival for Scottish citizens
Scottish citizens have little reason to use visa on arrival: a stay of 45 days or less needs no visa, and a longer one is simpler with an e-visa.
Visa on arrival works only at Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and Cam Ranh, with an approval letter obtained before you board and a $25 or $50 stamping fee at the airport. If you want to compare the options, you can choose a service.
Vietnam embassy in Scotland
Vietnam's embassy for the United Kingdom is in London, and you do not need it for an e-visa, which is issued online, or for a stay of 45 days or less.
Tips for Scottish travelers
Two points help Scottish travelers: which passport decides, and the clock change.
There is no Scottish passport
Scots hold a UK passport, so the United Kingdom's rule applies. If you also hold another passport, the one you show at the Vietnamese border decides.
Clocks go back on October 25
The United Kingdom follows summer time until the last Sunday in October, which is October 25, 2026. After that each cut-off falls one hour later; the table shows both.
eVisaVietnam.com is a private visa service operated by TK VIET NAM., JSC, not the Vietnamese government. You can apply yourself at evisa.gov.vn for US$25. If you want your files checked and a delivery time backed by a full refund, apply for your e-visa with us.
