What to prepare in Australia
You can get a Vietnam visa in Australia in one sitting once four things are ready. A Vietnam visa application from Australia needs:
- An Australian passport: Valid for at least 6 months from your entry date, with two blank pages.
- A data page image: The page with your photo, all four corners in view, and the two code lines at the bottom sharp, with no glare on the laminate.
- A portrait photo: Recent, facing the camera, white background, no glasses. The photo requirements guide shows examples.
- A card and an emergency contact: A card that works for overseas online payments, and the name, address and phone of a contact at home.
Copy your name from the two code lines at the bottom of the data page, in capital letters, including middle names. If you hold a second passport, apply with the one you will use at the airline desk and at the border.
When to apply from Australia
Apply at least two weeks before you fly if you choose Standard, because 5 to 7 working days can stretch over weekends and Vietnamese public holidays. Vietnamese working hours overlap with yours, since Vietnam is only 1 to 4 hours behind Australia.
| Your time at 9:00 | Vietnam time | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney or Melbourne, daylight saving time | 5:00 | Before the Vietnamese working day starts at 8:00 |
| Sydney or Melbourne, standard time | 6:00 | Same |
| Brisbane | 6:00 | No daylight saving |
| Perth | 8:00 | The working day is just starting |
Sydney and Melbourne use daylight saving time from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April; Brisbane and Perth do not. An order placed in the Australian morning is therefore processed the same day in Vietnam. For example, Same day orders in Sydney in daylight saving time must be placed before 18:15 to arrive that evening, and the full table of cut-offs is on our guide for Australian citizens. The urgent e-visa page has every speed.
Paying for your e-visa from Australia
You pay in US dollars by credit or debit card. A Standard single-entry e-visa costs $47, about A$68 at 1 USD = 1.4374 AUD (xe.com, October 8, 2026), government fee included. Your card issuer sets the final Australian dollar amount and may add its own foreign-currency fee. See the full price table for every speed.
On evisa.gov.vn the government fee alone is US$25 (approx. A$36). If a card payment fails, check that the card allows overseas online payments and retry, instead of starting a second application.
Mistakes Australians make
Most delays come from five mistakes:
- Assuming Australians travel visa-free: They do not. Australia is not on Vietnam's exemption lists.
- Mixing up time zones: Perth and Sydney differ by up to three hours, and Sydney changes with daylight saving. Convert from your own city.
- A recycled photo: A crop from a passport or a photo of a printed picture is flagged.
- Dates with no margin: Start the validity a day or two before you land; 90 days costs the same as 30.
- An order on an Australian weekend: Saturday and Sunday daytime fall in the weekend window and use the Weekend and public holidays speed.
If you already filed a faulty application, read about e-visa problems before you apply again. Ready? Apply for your e-visa and a person checks your files before they go in.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply for a Vietnam visa online from Australia?
Yes. Australians apply online for the e-visa, valid for up to 90 days, pay by card and receive a PDF by email. No visit to the embassy in Canberra or the consulate in Sydney is needed.
Which Australian time zone matters when I order?
Your own. Vietnamese working days start at 8:00 in Vietnam, which is 12:00 in Sydney during daylight saving time and 9:00 in Perth. Use the conversion table above.
How early should I apply from Australia?
At least two weeks before you fly at Standard speed. If your flight is closer, choose a faster speed and check the cut-offs in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth time on our guide for Australian citizens.
What if my photo is rejected?
The system flags photos that look cropped or copied. Take a new one facing the camera against a white wall, and do not submit a second application while the first is pending.
Do I need an appointment at the embassy or consulate?
No. The e-visa is applied for online. The embassy and consulate handle passport-sticker visas for longer or special-purpose stays.
