Vietnam Visa Photo Requirements: Size, Format and Phone Tips

Vietnam visa photo requirements as evisa.gov.vn states them: 4x6 cm, jpg or jpeg, up to 2MB, white background. Right and wrong examples, phone tips, fixes.

How to apply Vietnam evisa

The Vietnam visa photo requirements are short: a recent portrait, 4x6 cm, in jpg or jpeg format, up to 2MB, facing the camera, with a white background and no hat or glasses. These are the rules that evisa.gov.vn states, checked in October 2026. This page gives the full list, right and wrong examples, passport scan rules, phone tips and fixes for the photo warnings. The wider checklist is on our e-visa requirements page, and you can apply for your e-visa with a photo check included.

eVisaVietnam.com is a private visa service operated by TK VIET NAM., JSC, not the Vietnamese government. You can apply yourself on the government e-visa site for US$25.

Vietnam visa photo requirements: size and specifications

The Vietnam e-visa photo size is 4x6 cm, and the Vietnam visa photo specifications are the five points in the table. The site states the size in centimeters, not in pixels, and the photo specifications here are the ones the site gives.

PointRequirement
Age of photoRecent, newly taken
Size4x6 cm
Filejpg or jpeg, 2MB or less
FaceLooking straight at the camera
Head and backgroundNo hat, no glasses, white background

Some other websites add rules, such as how much of the frame your head should fill. We do not repeat rules that evisa.gov.vn does not state. A photo that meets the five points above is the one to aim for, and the site's face check decides the rest when you upload it.

Right and wrong photos

Picture requirements for a Vietnam visa are easiest to see side by side. The table shows what works and what the site tends to reject.

WorksDoes not work
New photo taken today against a white wallA photo of a printed photo
Face straight to the camera, eyes openHead turned or tilted
Plain white backgroundPatterned wall, shadows behind you
jpg or jpeg file straight from the cameraHEIC, PDF or a screenshot
You alone in the frameAnother face in the background
Glasses and hat offSunglasses, hat or head covering that hides your face

Passport scan requirements

The passport scan is the second file the site needs. For a Vietnam passport photo size, the site gives no centimeter rule for the scan; it asks for a clear image of one passport data page, with all four corners visible.

Lay the passport flat, avoid glare on the laminate, keep fingers out of the frame and check that the two lines of letters and "<" signs at the bottom are readable. If they are cut off, the site shows "No MRZ detected in the passport image". Our page on e-visa problems and fixes explains this message and the others.

How to take the photo for a Vietnam visa with your phone

A phone photo works. To take a photo for a Vietnam visa at home:

  1. Pick the wall: Stand in front of a plain white wall in even daylight.
  2. Ask someone to shoot: A selfie from arm's length distorts the face; ask someone else to hold the phone at eye level.
  3. Remove glasses and hat: Look straight at the camera with your mouth closed.
  4. Keep the original: Upload the file straight from the camera, with no filter or editing app.
  5. Check the file: It should be jpg or jpeg, and 2MB or less. If your phone saves HEIC, change the camera format or convert the file.

Then upload it in the form. Our guide on how to apply shows where each file goes.

If the site says your photo may be rejected

Photo messages on evisa.gov.vn appear at upload and end with "Your application may be rejected". Fix the photo before you continue, because the government fee is not refunded if the e-visa is refused.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Vietnam visa photo size?

4x6 cm. The site asks for a recent, newly taken portrait in jpg or jpeg format, 2MB or less, with a white background.

Can I take the e-visa photo with my phone?

Yes. Take it against a white wall in even light, face the camera and keep your glasses and hat off. Do not photograph a printed picture or crop the passport photo, because the site flags both.

Is a passport photo accepted?

A new photo in the same style works. A picture of your printed passport photo, or a crop from the passport page, triggers the "captured from another source" warning.

What file formats are accepted?

jpg and jpeg. A HEIC, PDF or screenshot file is not accepted, so convert it before you upload.

Is there a required photo size in pixels?

The site states the photo size as 4x6 cm and the file limit as 2MB. It does not give a pixel size, so we do not either.
