How to apply for Vietnam visa from Malaysia only matters when you plan a longer stay, because Malaysian citizens with an ordinary passport enter Vietnam without a visa for up to 30 days. For more than 30 days you apply online for the e-visa, valid for up to 90 days, pay by card, upload a passport page and a photo, and receive a PDF by email. This page covers when you need it, the steps, what to prepare, timing in Kuala Lumpur time, paying from Malaysia and mistakes to avoid. For prices in ringgit and urgent cut-offs, see our guide to the Vietnam visa for Malaysian citizens. If your stay passes 30 days, you can apply for your e-visa.

eVisaVietnam.com is a private visa service operated by TK VIET NAM., JSC, not the Vietnamese government. You can apply yourself at evisa.gov.vn for US$25.

How to apply for Vietnam visa from Malaysia

Decide first whether you need to apply. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs list published on June 30, 2025 gives Malaysian citizens 30 days or less without a visa, under a bilateral agreement that took effect on November 25, 2001, published by the Vietnamese embassy in Washington. A Malaysia to Vietnam visa is needed only beyond that.

If your stay will pass 30 days, you apply in five steps with us:

  1. Fill in the form: Enter your passport details, trip dates, entry gate and the speed you want. The price and delivery time update as you choose.
  2. Pay by card: Pay in US dollars. The price at checkout is the price we charge.
  3. Upload your files: Add the passport data page and the portrait photo, any time after paying.
  4. We check and submit: A person looks at the photo and scan, and contacts you if a file has a problem, before submitting on evisa.gov.vn.
  5. Receive the PDF: The approved e-visa arrives by email. Check your name and passport number against your passport, and print one copy.

You can also apply yourself on evisa.gov.vn; our guide on how to apply covers that route screen by screen. To follow an order with us, use the e-visa status tool.

What to prepare in Malaysia

A Vietnam e-visa application from Malaysia needs four things ready:

  • A Malaysian passport: Valid for at least 6 months from your entry date, with two blank pages.
  • A data page image: The page with your photo, all four corners in view, the two code lines at the bottom sharp, without glare.
  • A portrait photo: Recent, facing the camera, white background, no glasses. See the photo requirements.
  • A card and an emergency contact: A card enabled for online payments abroad, and the name, address and phone of a contact at home.

Copy your name from the two code lines at the bottom of the data page, in capital letters, including middle names. The form also asks for the address of your first night in Vietnam.

When to apply from Malaysia

Apply at least two weeks before you fly if you choose Standard, because 5 to 7 working days can stretch over weekends and Vietnamese public holidays. Vietnam is only 1 hour behind Kuala Lumpur, and neither country changes its clocks, so the conversion never changes.

Your time in Kuala LumpurVietnam timeWhat it means
9:008:00The Vietnamese working day starts
15:1514:15Last order for Same day
18:3017:30Last order for Emergency

Because the working hours overlap, an urgent e-visa ordered in the morning can arrive the same day. The full table of cut-offs is on our guide for Malaysian citizens, and the urgent e-visa page covers every speed. Orders placed after the cut-off move to the next Vietnamese working morning.

Paying for your e-visa from Malaysia

You pay in US dollars by credit or debit card. A Standard single-entry e-visa costs $47, about RM192 at 1 USD = 4.0884 MYR (xe.com, October 8, 2026), government fee included, and your bank sets the final ringgit amount. See the full price table for every speed.

On evisa.gov.vn the government fee alone is US$25. If a payment fails, check that your card allows online payments abroad and retry, rather than starting a second application.

Mistakes Malaysian applicants make

Most problems come from five mistakes:

  • Applying when you do not need to: For 30 days or less, no visa is needed. You still need a valid passport and a ticket out.
  • Not planning a longer stay: A Vietnam visa for Malaysians longer than 30 days must be arranged before you fly. The bilateral text does not say how the 30 days are counted or whether they can be extended; see our visa extension page.
  • A recycled photo: A crop from a passport or a photo of a printed picture is flagged.
  • A cropped passport scan: If the two code lines are cut off, the site cannot read the passport.
  • Dates with no margin: Start the validity a day or two before you land; 90 days costs the same as 30.

For a stay of 31 to 90 days, apply for your e-visa and a person checks your files before they go in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to apply for a Vietnam visa from Malaysia?

Not for a stay of 30 days or less: Malaysian citizens with an ordinary passport enter visa-free. For a longer stay you need an e-visa, valid for up to 90 days, applied for online before you fly.

How do I apply for an e-visa from Malaysia?

Apply online: fill in the form, pay by card, upload the passport data page and a photo, and receive the PDF by email. No visit to the embassy in Kuala Lumpur is needed.

How early should I apply from Malaysia?

At least two weeks before you fly at Standard speed. If your flight is closer, choose a faster speed and check the cut-offs in Kuala Lumpur time on our guide for Malaysian citizens.

Can I pay in ringgit?

No. The payment is in US dollars and your bank converts it. The $47 Standard price was about RM192 on October 8, 2026, but the final amount depends on your bank.

Do I need the embassy in Kuala Lumpur?

No. The e-visa is applied for online, and a stay of 30 days or less needs no visa. The embassy handles passport-sticker visas for special-purpose stays.
