What to prepare in New Zealand
A Vietnam e-visa application from New Zealand needs four things ready:
- A New Zealand passport: Valid for at least 6 months from your entry date, with two blank pages.
- A data page image: The page with your photo, all four corners in view, the two code lines at the bottom sharp, without glare.
- A portrait photo: Recent, facing the camera, white background, no glasses. See the photo requirements for examples.
- A card and an emergency contact: A card enabled for online payments abroad, and the name, address and phone of a contact at home.
Copy your name from the two code lines at the bottom of the data page, in capital letters, including middle names. If you hold a second passport, apply with the one you will use at the airline desk and at the border.
When to apply from New Zealand
Apply at least two weeks before you fly if you choose Standard, because 5 to 7 working days can stretch over weekends and Vietnamese public holidays. The time difference is the quirk: Vietnam is 6 hours behind Auckland during daylight saving time and 5 hours behind in winter.
| Your time in Auckland | Vietnam time (daylight / standard) |
|---|---|
| 9:00 | 3:00 / 4:00 |
| 17:00 | 11:00 / 12:00 |
Auckland uses daylight saving time from the last Sunday in September to the first Sunday in April. The Vietnamese working day starts at 8:00, which is 14:00 in Auckland in daylight saving time and 13:00 in winter. An order placed in the New Zealand morning waits for the Vietnamese office to open, while one placed in the afternoon is processed straight away. The last Emergency order of the day is 23:30 in daylight saving time (22:30 in winter). Our guide for New Zealand citizens has the full table, and the urgent e-visa page covers every speed.
Weekends work differently. Our weekend window runs from Friday 18:00 to Sunday 16:00 Vietnam time, which is Saturday 00:00 to Sunday 22:00 in Auckland during daylight saving time. An order placed in that window uses the Weekend and public holidays speed, so a Saturday daytime order in New Zealand does not wait for Monday.
Paying for your e-visa from New Zealand
You pay in US dollars by credit or debit card. A Standard single-entry e-visa costs $47, about NZ$84 at 1 USD = 1.7874 NZD (xe.com, October 8, 2026), government fee included, with no card surcharge, and your card issuer sets the final New Zealand dollar amount. See the full price table for every speed.
On evisa.gov.vn the government fee alone is US$25. If a payment fails, check that your card allows online payments abroad and retry, rather than starting a second application.
Mistakes New Zealand applicants make
Most problems come from five mistakes:
- Converting the wrong way: Vietnam is behind Auckland, not ahead. A Vietnamese 8:00 is 13:00 or 14:00 in Auckland.
- Ignoring the date range: The New Zealand government's SafeTravel service asks travelers to read their visa conditions carefully, because overstaying can affect their ability to book accommodation. Check the entry date, the number of days and single or multiple entry on the e-visa before you fly.
- A recycled photo: A crop from a passport or a photo of a printed picture is flagged.
- A cropped passport scan: If the two code lines are cut off, the site cannot read the passport.
- Dates with no margin: Start the validity a day or two before you land; 90 days costs the same as 30.
If you already filed a faulty application, read about e-visa problems before you apply again. Ready? Apply for your e-visa and a person checks your files before they go in.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply for a Vietnam visa online from New Zealand?
Yes. New Zealanders apply online for the e-visa, valid for up to 90 days, pay by card and receive a PDF by email. No visit to the embassy in Wellington is needed.
Which time zone matters when I order?
Auckland time, converted to Vietnam. Vietnam is 6 hours behind Auckland in daylight saving time and 5 hours behind in winter, so a Vietnamese working day runs from 13:00 or 14:00 in Auckland.
How early should I apply from New Zealand?
At least two weeks before you fly at Standard speed. If your flight is closer, choose a faster speed and check the cut-offs in Auckland time on our guide for New Zealand citizens.
What if I hold two passports?
Apply with the passport you will use at the airline desk and at the border. A British passport allows up to 45 days without a visa, while an Australian passport does not.
Do I need the embassy in Wellington?
No. The e-visa is applied for online. The embassy handles passport-sticker visas for longer or special-purpose stays.
