How to Apply for Vietnam Visa From UK: When You Need an E-Visa
How to apply for Vietnam visa from UK: British citizens are visa-free for 45 days. For longer stays, the e-visa steps, timing in UK time and paying in USD.
Most British travelers do not need to know how to apply for Vietnam visa from UK, because UK citizens enter visa-free and stay up to 45 days. You only apply when a single stay will be longer, or when you travel on a British passport that does not show UK citizenship. This page explains when that is, then the e-visa steps, what to prepare, timing in UK time, paying from the UK and the mistakes British applicants make. For prices in pounds and urgent cut-offs, see our guide to the Vietnam visa for UK citizens. If your trip runs past 45 days, you can apply for your e-visa.
eVisaVietnam.com is a private visa service operated by TK VIET NAM., JSC, not the Vietnamese government. You can apply yourself at evisa.gov.vn for US$25.

How to apply for Vietnam visa from UK
Check the 45 days first, then apply only if you need to. British citizens can enter without a visa for up to 45 days under Resolution 44/NQ-CP, valid until March 14, 2028; the UK government's entry requirements for Vietnam give the same limit. Our UK citizens guide explains the exemption.
If you need a Vietnam e-visa for longer than 45 days, you apply in five steps with us:
- Fill in the form: Enter your passport details, trip dates, entry gate and the speed you want. The price and delivery time update as you choose.
- Pay by card: Pay in US dollars. The price at checkout is the price we charge.
- Upload your files: Add the passport data page and the portrait photo, any time after paying.
- We check and submit: A person looks at the photo and scan, and contacts you if a file has a problem, before submitting on evisa.gov.vn.
- Receive the PDF: The approved e-visa arrives by email. Check your name and passport number, and print one copy.
You can also apply yourself on evisa.gov.vn; our guide on how to apply covers that route screen by screen. A Vietnam e-visa application from the UK uses the same form as every country.
What to prepare in the UK
Have four things ready before you open the form:
- A passport that shows UK citizenship: Valid for at least 6 months from your entry date, with two blank pages. The e-visa is issued for one passport, so enter the number of the one you will travel on.
- A data page image: The page with your photo, all four corners in view, the two code lines at the bottom sharp, no glare.
- A portrait photo: Recent, facing the camera, white background, no glasses. See the photo requirements.
- A card and an emergency contact: A card enabled for online payments abroad, and the name, address and phone of a contact at home.
Copy your name from the two code lines at the bottom of the data page, in capital letters, including middle names. If you hold a British National (Overseas) passport or another British passport that is not a citizen passport, confirm with the Vietnamese embassy before relying on the 45 days, or apply for an e-visa, which every nationality can get.
When to apply from the UK
Apply at least two weeks before you fly if you choose Standard, because 5 to 7 working days can stretch over weekends and Vietnamese public holidays. Vietnam is 6 hours ahead of London in British Summer Time and 7 hours ahead in winter.
| Your time | Vietnam time (BST / GMT) |
|---|---|
| 9:00 | 15:00 / 16:00 |
| 15:00 | 21:00 / 22:00 |
British Summer Time runs from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October. An order placed in the UK morning is processed the same day in Vietnam, and urgent speeds can arrive within hours. The full table of cut-offs is on our UK citizens guide, and the urgent e-visa page covers every speed.
Paying for your e-visa from the UK
You pay in US dollars by credit or debit card. A Standard single-entry e-visa costs $47, about £36 at 1 USD = 0.7569 GBP (xe.com, October 8, 2026), government fee included, and your card provider sets the sterling amount. See the full price table for every speed.
On evisa.gov.vn the government fee alone is US$25 (approx. £19). If a payment fails, check that your card allows online payments abroad and retry, instead of starting a second application.
Mistakes British applicants make
Most problems come from five mistakes:
- Entering visa-free, then staying longer: The 45 days are fixed. If you might pass them, apply for the e-visa before you fly. See extending your visa for what is and is not possible.
- Counting days for the whole trip: The limit applies per stay in Vietnam. A trip that moves between Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos may suit a multiple-entry e-visa.
- Assuming every British passport is covered: The resolution names UK citizens. Check yours.
- A recycled photo: A crop from a passport or a photo of a printed picture is flagged.
- Dates with no margin: Start the validity a day or two before you land; 90 days costs the same as 30.
Staying more than 45 days? Apply for your e-visa and a person checks your files before they go in.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to apply for a Vietnam visa from the UK?
Not for a stay of up to 45 days: UK citizens enter visa-free for any purpose. For a longer stay you need an e-visa, valid for up to 90 days, applied for online before you fly.
How do I apply for an e-visa from the UK?
Apply online: fill in the form, pay by card, upload the passport data page and a photo, and receive the PDF by email. No visit to the Vietnamese embassy in London is needed.
Can I apply with a British National (Overseas) passport?
An e-visa is open to every nationality, so yes. The 45-day exemption names UK citizens, so confirm with the embassy before relying on visa-free entry with a BNO passport.
How early should I apply from the UK?
At least two weeks before you fly at Standard speed. If your flight is closer, choose a faster speed and check the cut-offs in London time on our guide for UK citizens.
Can I extend my 45 days once I am in Vietnam?
Extending depends on a sponsor filing with the immigration authority, and the decision is theirs. Read our visa extension page first, and apply for an e-visa before you fly if you already know you will stay longer.
