Vietnam Visa Passport Requirements: Validity, Pages and New Passports
Vietnam visa passport requirements: valid 6 months from your entry date with two blank pages. Covers name matching, new passports and two passports.
The Vietnam visa passport requirements come down to one rule: your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date, with two blank pages (as of October 2026). The name and passport number on the e-visa must match the passport you travel with. This page covers the validity rule, the blank pages, how to enter your name and number, what to do if you get a new passport after the e-visa is issued, and two passports. For the full document list, see our Vietnam e-visa requirements checklist, or apply for your e-visa once your passport is ready.
eVisaVietnam.com is a private visa service operated by TK VIET NAM., JSC, not the Vietnamese government. You can apply yourself at evisa.gov.vn for US$25.

What are the Vietnam visa passport requirements?
A passport for a Vietnam e-visa must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date, with two blank pages. The six months run from the day you plan to enter Vietnam, not from the day you apply and not from the day you leave.
The Vietnam passport validity of 6 months is checked by airlines at boarding, and border officers check it again on arrival. A passport that is one week short can stop the trip at the airline desk, so renew first if you are close to the limit. Some guides and advice pages elsewhere count from a different date or give a different number of pages. We use the rule above, and if your own government's travel advice (for US citizens, the State Department's Vietnam page) says something stricter, follow the stricter version.
How many blank pages does the passport need?
Two blank pages are needed. Blank means a page with no stamps and no visas, ready for the officer. The endorsement pages at the back of some passports are often not counted, so look for full pages that are unused.
A passport with only one free page is a problem even if it is valid for years. If you are short, renew the passport before you apply, because an e-visa application asks for the passport you will actually use.
The name and number on your application
The name on the application is read from the two lines of code at the bottom of the data page, in capital letters, and it must match the passport. The passport number must be the one you will carry. Our photo requirements guide covers the portrait that goes with it.
A scan of the data page goes in with the application, with all four corners visible and the two code lines sharp. If you spot a typo after the e-visa is issued, read how to fix a wrong passport number.
Can I use a new passport after I get an e-visa?
A new passport after a Vietnam e-visa has no rule we can cite. The e-visa shows the passport number you entered, so a new passport carries a different number, and we have not found a Vietnamese government rule on what happens then. We do not guess.
You have two safe options. Carry both passports, the old one with the e-visa and the new one, and ask the Vietnam Immigration Department or the Vietnamese embassy in your country to confirm in writing before you travel. Or apply for a new e-visa on the new passport, which removes the doubt if your trip is close. If you can wait to renew your passport until after the trip, that avoids the question.
Two passports and other passport types
With dual nationality and a Vietnam e-visa, apply with the passport you will use at the airline desk and at immigration, because the e-visa is tied to its number. The application also asks about other passports you hold or have used to enter Vietnam, so have those numbers ready. The how to apply guide shows where.
A temporary or emergency passport may carry fewer pages or a shorter validity than the rule above. Check it against the rule before you pay, and if in doubt, ask your passport office or the Vietnamese embassy first. Children need their own passport; our children and groups page explains the e-visa side.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long must my passport be valid for a Vietnam e-visa?
At least 6 months from your entry date, with two blank pages. The six months run from the day you plan to enter Vietnam, as of October 2026.
Is the six months counted from entry or exit?
From your entry date. Count from the day you will land or cross the border, not from your departure from Vietnam.
Does my name have to match the passport exactly?
Yes. Enter it as it appears in the two code lines at the bottom of the data page, in capital letters. A different spelling can cause trouble at check-in or at the border.
What if my passport expires soon?
Renew it before you apply. A passport that is valid for less than 6 months from your entry date does not meet the rule, and the e-visa is tied to the passport number you enter.
Do children need their own passport?
Yes, for a child to travel on an e-visa the child needs a passport. See our children and groups page for how the application works.
