What to prepare in Austria
A Vietnam e-visa application from Austria needs four things ready:
- An Austrian passport: Valid for at least 6 months from your entry date, with two blank pages.
- A data page image: The page with your photo, all four corners in view, and the two code lines at the bottom sharp, without glare.
- A portrait photo: Recent, facing the camera, white background, no glasses. The photo requirements guide shows examples that pass and fail.
- A card and an emergency contact: A card enabled for online payments to a foreign merchant, and the name, address and phone of a contact at home.
Copy your name from the two code lines at the bottom of the data page, in capital letters, including middle names and any umlaut written as the code lines show it. The form also asks for the address of your first night in Vietnam.
When to apply from Austria
Apply at least two weeks before you fly if you choose Standard, because 5 to 7 working days can stretch over weekends and Vietnamese public holidays. Vienna is 5 to 6 hours behind Vietnam. Vienna changes its clocks, so the gap shifts by an hour twice a year.
| Your time in Vienna | Vietnam time |
|---|---|
| 8:00, summer time | 13:00 |
| 8:00, winter time | 14:00 |
| 12:00, summer time | 17:00 |
| 12:00, winter time | 18:00 |
| 18:00, summer time | 23:00 |
| 18:00, winter time | 0:00 the next day |
| 22:00, summer time | 3:00 the next day |
| 22:00, winter time | 4:00 the next day |
For Same day delivery, order between 3:00 and 9:15 in Vienna in summer time (2:00 and 8:15 in winter), on a day that is a working day in Vietnam. Order before lunch if you need an urgent speed, because the Vietnamese working day is almost over by early afternoon in Vienna. Our guide for Austrian citizens has the full table of cut-offs, and the urgent e-visa page covers every speed.
Paying for your e-visa from Austria
You pay in US dollars by credit or debit card. A Standard single-entry e-visa costs $47, about €42, government fee included.
Figures use 1 USD = 0.8927 EUR (xe.com, October 10, 2026). Euro cards are charged in US dollars, so your bank converts the amount and may add a foreign-currency fee. See the full price table for every speed.
On evisa.gov.vn the government fee alone is US$25 (approx. €22). If a payment fails, check that your card allows online payments to foreign merchants and retry, rather than starting a second application.
Mistakes Austrian applicants make
The first two points below are specific to Austrian applicants; the last two apply to everyone.
- Using the German or Italian rule: German and Italian passports allow 45 days in Vietnam without a visa, and Austrians often travel with friends who hold one. An Austrian passport has no such right.
- A name written with an umlaut: Type the name exactly as the code lines show it, with the letters the machine-readable zone uses, so the form matches the scan.
- A look-alike website: The government site is evisa.gov.vn. Private services, including ours, say that they are private; leave any site that does not say who runs it.
- A gate you will not use: Choose the airport or border gate you will really enter through, and check the ports of entry list.
If you already filed a faulty application, read about e-visa problems first. Ready? Apply for your e-visa and a person checks your files before they go in.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply for a Vietnam visa online from Austria?
Yes. Austrian citizens with an ordinary passport apply online for the e-visa, valid for up to 90 days, pay by card and receive a PDF by email.
How early should I apply from Austria?
At least two weeks before you fly at Standard speed. If your flight is closer, choose a faster speed and check the cut-offs in Vienna time on our guide for Austrian citizens.
Which card works for the e-visa fee?
A debit or credit card enabled for online payments to a foreign merchant. An Austrian bank card works if it allows online payments to foreign merchants; some banks ask you to confirm the payment in their app.
Can Austrians use the German or Italian rule?
No. German and Italian passport holders can stay 45 days in Vietnam without a visa, but an Austrian passport does not carry that right, so you apply for the e-visa.
Do I need the Vietnam embassy for the e-visa?
No. The e-visa is applied for online and issued as a PDF. The Embassy of Vietnam in Vienna is at Felix Mottl-Strasse 20, 1190 Vienna. Our page on the Vietnam embassy in Austria has the details.
