Vietnam Visa Wrong Passport Number or Name: How to Fix It

Vietnam visa wrong passport number, name or date of birth? See which errors Update E-Visa fixes from $65, what airlines check and when to apply again.

How to apply Vietnam evisa

A Vietnam visa wrong passport number is a typing error you can fix, but only with a corrected e-visa: once the e-visa is issued, the application is closed and cannot be edited online. The same goes for a misspelled name or a wrong date of birth. This page shows what to do for each type of error, what the airline checks, and what a fix costs. For the full process, see our hub on how to correct Vietnam visa details, or choose a service if you are unsure.

eVisaVietnam.com is a private visa service operated by TK VIET NAM., JSC, not the Vietnamese government. You can apply yourself at evisa.gov.vn for US$25.

Why the details must match your passport

The details on an e-visa must match the passport you travel on, letter for letter. The Embassy of Ireland in Hanoi tells Irish travelers on its visa page that all details must be entered exactly as shown on the passport (as of October 2026).

The Embassy of Vietnam in India adds on its e-visa page that embassies do not correct or change issued e-visas and refer travelers to the Vietnam Immigration Department. That is why a mistake found after approval needs a corrected e-visa, not a quick edit.

Vietnam visa wrong passport number, name or birth date

The table says what each error needs. Whatever the mistake, the corrected e-visa has to show the data page of your passport exactly.

ErrorExampleWhat to do
Passport numberOne digit swappedUpdate E-Visa with your passport scan
NameLetters missing or swappedUpdate E-Visa; to amend a Vietnam e-visa with a wrong name, the passport scan is the proof
Date of birthDay and month reversedUpdate E-Visa with your passport scan
GenderMarked the wrong boxMessage us before you order
NationalityWrong country chosenMessage us; a different passport may need a new application

If you renewed your passport after you applied, the number on the e-visa no longer matches the passport you carry. That is the same problem as a typo, and the same fix applies. Also check the entry date at the same time, because a correction is a good moment to confirm the whole document.

What happens at check-in if the details do not match

The first check is at the airline desk, before you leave your country. Airlines ask for the e-visa PDF and compare it with your passport, and a mismatch can stop you from boarding. If that is already happening, see our denied boarding checklist.

A mismatch you cannot fix on the spot is also a risk at the Vietnamese border, so fix the e-visa before you travel rather than hoping nobody notices. A small error is easier to fix at home than at an airport.

Fix it or apply again?

Fix it when the error is a typo in the name, date of birth, passport number or entry date. Apply again when the e-visa itself is the problem, for example when you change nationality or use another passport, or when the application was refused.

If you apply again, you pay the government fee again, so compare the prices first. A new e-visa at Standard speed costs $47 and takes 5 to 7 working days; Update E-Visa costs $65 and can be due the same day. Our urgent e-visa page covers the faster new-application speeds.

Cost and time

Update E-Visa costs $65 for the Same day option and $85 for the weekend and public holiday option. Use the Update E-Visa form, then pay by card. You upload your passport scan and the e-visa you hold now, and describe the mistake.

On a weekday, an order placed before 9:00 Vietnam time (GMT+7) is due at 14:00 the same day. One placed from 9:00 to 14:44 is due at 18:30, and from 14:45 at 14:00 the next working day. The form shows the exact time before you pay.

If you applied yourself and want a person to check your documents next time, apply for your e-visa with us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I enter Vietnam if my e-visa has a small typo in my name?

Do not count on it. The airline compares the e-visa with your passport at check-in, and a mismatch can stop you from boarding. Correct it before you fly.

I renewed my passport after getting my e-visa. What now?

The e-visa shows your old passport number, so it no longer matches. Order Update E-Visa with a scan of the new passport and the e-visa you hold. Our e-visa problems and fixes guide lists other common snags.

Can the date of birth be changed?

Yes, if it is a typing error. Send a scan of the passport data page with your order and say which date is correct.

Is the government fee refunded when I correct a mistake?

The government fee on an e-visa is not refunded when it is refused, and Update E-Visa is priced separately. A correction does not change the fee you paid for the original e-visa.
