Phu Quoc Visa Exemption 30 Days: Who Qualifies and When You Need an E-Visa
Phu Quoc visa exemption 30 days: foreigners, including Indians, can stay on the island visa-free. See the island-only limit and when you need an e-visa.
The Phu Quoc visa exemption 30 days rule lets foreigners stay on Phu Quoc island for up to 30 days without a visa, and it covers Indian citizens like every other nationality. It applies to the island only: one day on the mainland needs a visa. This page explains the Phu Quoc visa exemption for 2026 (as of October), how entry works, what happens if you want to see the mainland, and the case for Indian travelers. Our Vietnam visa exemption page lists the other exemptions. If your trip goes beyond the island, apply for your e-visa before you fly.

What is the Phu Quoc visa exemption 30 days rule?
Foreigners can stay on Phu Quoc island for up to 30 days without a visa under Law 51/2019/QH14, signed on November 25, 2019 and in force since July 1, 2020. The law amends Vietnam's law on foreigners' entry, exit, transit and residence.
The exemption is not a list of countries. It depends on where you stay, not on your passport. Your passport must still be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date, with two blank pages. See the passport rules for details.
Entering Phu Quoc without a visa
You enter Phu Quoc without a visa by arriving at the island on a flight from outside Vietnam, with Phu Quoc as your destination. We could not read the implementing rules in the government's own text, so the exact conditions below come from tourism sources, and you should confirm them before you book.
A Vietnam News sponsored feature says a visitor can also come through another international border gate, stay in the transit area, and then transfer to the island. Sources disagree on how connections work, and an airline may refuse boarding if the rule is misunderstood.
Two steps protect you. Ask your airline in writing whether your route qualifies, especially if you change planes in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. Then keep a return or onward ticket ready. The 30 days count from the day you enter, so plan the end date. For Phu Quoc without visa travel, the safest booking is a flight that lands at Phu Quoc International Airport.
The island-only limit: what happens if you go to the mainland
The Phu Quoc visa exemption stops at the island. If you take a ferry or a flight to the mainland, you are in Vietnam without a visa unless you hold one.
| Your plan | What you need |
|---|---|
| Phu Quoc only, up to 30 days | No visa |
| Phu Quoc, then the mainland | An e-visa, applied for before you fly |
| Mainland first, then Phu Quoc | An e-visa for the whole trip |
| Phu Quoc, then the mainland, then another country | An e-visa, single or multiple entry as needed |
Apply for the e-visa before you leave home, because it is needed when you cross. The e-visa follows Law 23/2023/QH15 and is valid up to 90 days. Check the entry ports list for the airport or gate where you will enter the mainland. If you are unsure whether you will leave the island, apply for your e-visa anyway.
Phu Quoc visa for Indians
Indian citizens do not need a visa for Phu Quoc if they stay on the island up to 30 days. The Phu Quoc visa for Indians works the same way as for every other nationality, because the exemption depends on the island.
India is not on the exemption lists for mainland Vietnam, so a trip that includes Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang needs an e-visa. The same applies to Indian citizens who start on the island and then want to cross. Our page for Indian citizens explains the e-visa, the price in rupees and the documents. A Phu Quoc visa for Indian passport holders has one extra thing to watch: confirm your flight route with your airline before you book, as above.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Indian citizens need a visa for Phu Quoc?
No, not for a stay of up to 30 days on Phu Quoc island. The exemption covers foreigners of any nationality, including Indian citizens. Any trip to the mainland needs an e-visa.
Can I visit the mainland from Phu Quoc without a visa?
No. The exemption covers Phu Quoc island only. If you plan even one day on the mainland, get an e-visa before you fly.
How long can I stay in Phu Quoc without a visa?
Up to 30 days, counted from the day you enter. After 30 days you must leave, or hold a visa for a longer stay.
Does my passport need to be valid for 6 months?
Yes. Use the same rule as for the e-visa: valid for at least 6 months from your entry date, with two blank pages.
What if I want to leave Phu Quoc and come back?
Ask your airline and the Vietnam Immigration Department before you book, because the rules for re-entry are not covered here. If your plan includes the mainland, an e-visa with multiple entry is the safer choice.
